The $1 Power Play add-on multiplies most non-jackpot Powerball prizes by 2× to 10×. Here's exactly how the multiplier is drawn, when it's worth the extra dollar, and the worked math behind whether to opt in.
What Power Play is
Power Play is an optional $1 add-on to a regular $2 Powerball ticket. Add it to a play and a separate Power Play number is drawn after the main 5 white balls + red Powerball. That multiplier — 2, 3, 4, 5, or in some draws 10 — multiplies most non-jackpot prizes on your ticket.
A standard Powerball ticket costs $2 per play. With Power Play on, that becomes $3 per play. The Power Play add-on applies to every play on the ticket — you cannot select Power Play for some plays and not others on a single ticket, though you can play multiple tickets with different choices.
What Power Play multiplies (and what it doesn't)
Power Play multiplies the prize in every non-jackpot tier with two important exceptions worth knowing in detail.

The Match-5 exception
When you match all 5 white balls but miss the Powerball, the prize is normally $1,000,000. Power Play does NOT multiply this by the drawn multiplier. Instead, Power Play turns the $1M into a flat $2M — regardless of whether the drawn multiplier is 2×, 5×, or 10×. This is by design: if a 10× multiplier landed on Match-5, the prize would balloon to $10M and disrupt the prize-pool math.
The jackpot exception
Power Play never multiplies the jackpot. The jackpot rolls and grows on its own schedule based on ticket sales; Power Play has no effect on what you'd win if all 6 of your numbers hit. The Power Play purchase has no effect on your odds of winning the jackpot either — only the non-jackpot prize size if you match enough numbers.
The 10× cap rule
Here's the wrinkle that catches a lot of players: the 10× multiplier is only in the Power Play wheel when the advertised jackpot is under $150 million. Once the jackpot climbs above $150M, the lottery removes the 10× ball and the wheel only spins between 2×, 3×, 4×, and 5×.
Practically: the headline-grabbing $400M+ jackpots that drive the most ticket sales come with WORSE Power Play economics than the smaller starter jackpots. The 10× multiplier is most valuable on the lowest-prize draws.
This counterintuitive design exists because the 10× multiplier increases the prize-pool reserve requirement beyond what's sustainable at very large jackpot tiers. The 10× ball lives in the small-jackpot wheel where ticket sales — and therefore prize-pool obligations — are lower.
How often each multiplier hits
The Power Play multiplier is drawn by a separate process from the main draw. The historical distribution skews heavily toward the 2× outcome because there are more 2× balls in the wheel than any other multiplier. Approximate historical distribution (under $150M jackpots):

The exact composition of the multiplier wheel is published in Powerball's official rules; the actual draw-to-draw frequencies match the published composition very closely over time, as you'd expect from a fair drawing.
Expected value math — is Power Play worth $1?
For Power Play to be expected-value-positive, your $1 needs to buy at least $1 of additional expected prize value. The math involves summing across every prize tier, weighted by the probability of hitting it and the expected multiplier boost.
Worked calculation (rough)
Over a long run of draws, the expected multiplier is approximately: 2 × 0.56 + 3 × 0.30 + 4 × 0.07 + 5 × 0.07 = 2.65× when the jackpot is over $150M (no 10× in the wheel). When the jackpot is under $150M and the 10× is in play, the expected multiplier is closer to 3.2-3.4×.
The expected prize at non-jackpot tiers (combined across all tiers, weighted by probability of hitting each) is roughly $0.32 per regular $2 ticket — that's the secondary-prize contribution to expected value, separate from the jackpot contribution.
Power Play takes that $0.32 of secondary-tier expected value and multiplies it by (expected multiplier − 1), since you would have received the base prize anyway and Power Play adds the multiplier-minus-one of extra. That gives:

Jackpot ≥ $150M (no 10×): Power Play extra EV ≈ $0.32 × (2.65 − 1) ≈ $0.53 of extra prize value per $1 spent. That's a roughly 53-cent loss on the dollar — better odds than scratch tickets but still negative EV.
•
Jackpot < $150M (with 10×): Power Play extra EV ≈ $0.32 × (3.3 − 1) ≈ $0.74 of extra prize value per $1 spent. That's about a 26-cent loss on the dollar — much closer to break-even but still below it.
•
Match-5 boost specifically: The $1M → $2M boost contributes about $0.085 of expected value all by itself ($1M extra × 1/11,688,053 odds). That's roughly 8.5 cents of the Power Play dollar's value regardless of multiplier wheel.
Conclusion: Power Play is closer to break-even when the jackpot is under $150M and worse when the jackpot is over $150M. It is never expected-value-positive on average — like every other lottery feature, the house edge is designed in.
The expected-value math doesn't capture the entertainment value of higher possible prizes, which is a legitimate reason people buy Power Play even when it's mildly negative EV. The point of these numbers is to set expectations, not to tell you what to do.
When Power Play makes more sense
•
Small jackpot draws. When the jackpot is under $150M, the 10× is in play and the expected multiplier is high enough that Power Play loses you about a quarter of a dollar instead of half a dollar. You're still losing, just less.
•
If you're playing for non-jackpot tiers specifically. Some players intentionally aim for the secondary prizes — Match-5 ($1M base, $2M with Power Play), Match-4+Powerball ($50K base, up to $250K with 5× Power Play). For those strategies, Power Play materially raises the upside-when-you-hit.
•
If you buy multiple tickets per draw. Variance averages out faster across many plays. If you're buying 10+ tickets, the $10 in Power Play money has a tighter return distribution than it would on a single ticket.
•
If the entertainment of higher possible prizes is worth a quarter to half a dollar. This is a personal judgment, not a math one.
When Power Play makes less sense
•
Huge jackpots ($400M+). The 10× is gone, the expected multiplier sits around 2.6×, and most ticket-buyers are there for the jackpot anyway. The jackpot isn't multiplied, so the marginal Power Play dollar buys you a small bump on the prizes you're not targeting.
•
Single-ticket plays. One ticket has extremely high variance on any given draw; the small expected-value gain from Power Play disappears into the noise.
•
If your bankroll is small. Adding 50% to your ticket cost (from $2 to $3) for negative-EV upside is a leverage move. Skipping Power Play effectively gets you 1.5 tickets per $3 spent — more chances at the jackpot per dollar.
History of the Power Play feature
Power Play launched in 2001 as a fixed 2×-5× multiplier wheel. The 10× multiplier was added in 2006 to drive interest during smaller jackpot periods. The Match-5 flat-$2M rule has been there since 2014 — before that, Match-5 was also multiplied, which created an awkward cap-and-rules complication around the 10× ball.
The current structure (10× capped at $150M jackpot, Match-5 flat $2M) has been stable since the 2014 redesign and is the structure all current EV math assumes. If Powerball ever changes the wheel composition or the jackpot cap, the numbers above shift accordingly.
